Why Moving to Memory Care Before the Holidays Can Make the Season Easier for Everyone
The holidays are supposed to be a time for making memories. But for families caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia, they can also become one of the most stressful times of the year.

Busy schedules, unfamiliar visitors, loud gatherings, disrupted routines, and travel can all increase confusion and anxiety for someone living with memory loss. At the same time, family caregivers often find themselves juggling holiday responsibilities while providing around-the-clock support.

If you’ve already begun wondering whether memory care may be the right next step, waiting until after the holidays isn’t always the kindest option. Moving beforehand can give your loved one time to adjust to a new environment while allowing your family to focus less on caregiving and more on simply being together.

Give Your Loved One Time to Build a New Routine

People living with dementia often feel most comfortable when daily life is predictable.

Consistent schedules for meals, activities, personal care, and rest can help reduce confusion and provide a greater sense of security. Establishing those routines before the busy holiday season begins gives your loved one an opportunity to become familiar with caregivers, surroundings, and daily rhythms without the added stimulation that often comes later in the year.

By the time holiday celebrations arrive, the community may already feel like a familiar place rather than an unfamiliar change.

Reduce Holiday Stress for the Whole Family

Family caregivers rarely get a break during the holidays. Along with shopping, cooking, decorating, and hosting visitors, you’re still managing medications, appointments, meals, safety concerns, and daily supervision.

Memory care provides professional support with those everyday needs, allowing you to step back from the role of full-time caregiver.

That doesn’t mean you’re stepping away from your loved one. It means you can spend your visits talking, sharing stories, listening to music together, or simply holding hands instead of constantly managing the next task.

Avoid the Challenges That Holiday Gatherings Can Bring

Large family celebrations can be overwhelming for someone living with dementia. Extra noise, unfamiliar faces, changes in routine, and crowded rooms may increase confusion or agitation. Even well-meaning relatives may not understand how dementia affects communication and behavior.

When your loved one is already settled into a memory care community, holiday visits can often be shorter, calmer, and better suited to their individual needs.

Allow Your Family Time to Adjust, Too

A move to memory care is a significant transition for everyone involved, and not just the person who’s actually moving. Family members often experience a mix of relief, sadness, uncertainty, and even guilt. Making the move before the holidays gives everyone time to process those emotions before seasonal celebrations begin.

You’ll have opportunities to learn the community’s routines, build relationships with caregivers, and gain confidence that your loved one is receiving compassionate, personalized support. That peace of mind can make holiday visits feel less stressful and more meaningful.

Planning Ahead Often Leads to a Smoother Transition

Many families begin researching memory care long before they decide to move. And that’s a good thing.

Planning ahead gives you time to tour communities, ask questions, understand available services, and choose the environment that feels like the best fit for your loved one.

Waiting until a medical emergency, caregiver burnout, or another crisis can make the decision feel rushed. Beginning the transition before those circumstances arise often creates a calmer experience for everyone involved.

Focus on Making Memories Instead of Managing Every Moment

One of the greatest gifts memory care can provide is the opportunity to redefine your relationship with your loved one. Instead of spending every visit focused on caregiving tasks, you can spend more time sharing meaningful experiences.

And remember: the holidays don’t have to be perfect to be meaningful.

For families affected by dementia, the greatest gift is often knowing that a loved one is safe, supported, and cared for by a compassionate team.

Moving into memory care before the holiday season allows routines to become established, reduces stress during one of the busiest times of year, and creates more opportunities for families to focus on what truly matters: being together.

If you’re beginning to explore memory care for someone you love, fall can be a thoughtful time to start the conversation.

Contact your local Priority Life Care community to schedule a tour, learn about our personalized approach to memory care, and discover how planning ahead can help make the holiday season more peaceful for your entire family.

Settling into Newhaven Court at Lindwood in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, before the holiday rush gives you time to make your new surroundings familiar. A fall outing to Twin Lakes Park or a performance at The Palace Theatre can help you stay connected to life in Westmoreland County. Moving earlier leaves time to build relationships and choose which holiday traditions you want to carry forward.

A move to Poet’s Walk Warrenton in Warrenton, Virginia, before the holidays can give families time to adjust together. Old Town Warrenton and nearby Sky Meadows State Park offer possibilities for familiar outings when they suit a resident’s preferences and abilities. Beginning earlier allows time to plan comfortable visits and bring treasured traditions into the season without rushing the transition.

Poet's Walk has been incredible. Cindy Murphy has been such a blessing to my whole family. From the very start she has always been there for me and my loved ones. If I have any questions or concerns big or small she is right there to do all that she can to help. She is not the only person working at Poet's Walk, which can cause concern when you are leaving a family member in a care facility and don't know if all of the staff will be as wonderful as the rest. Well Cindy has made sure that her staff knows everything that I have shared with her about my grandfather and what he needs to feel at home. We unfortunately had to place him somewhere prior to Poet's Walk and the experience was awful, so my family and I have seen what a difference the propper care can make. Poet's Walk has state of the art technology, trained staff, is clean, beautiful, and SAFE. Cindy and her staff treat my grandfather, and also the rest of my family, as if we are a part of theirs. It is heartwarming to see someone like Cindy making a facility like this feel like home for the residents and their families. Poet's Walk has exceeded our expectations. Without Cindy, I would not have the peace of mind that I do every day. I thank her and everyone at Poet's Walk.

Dissatisfied with Mom's prior home...we researched and found Poet's Walk in Warrenton. From day one Carol Rose made her feel like she was home and has served as a constant conduit of information on days we were unable to be there. The entire team; from Terry out front, to Jodi, Tracy and their staff have made us comfortable knowing Mom is well cared for. We have recommended Poet's Walk to friends who are now able experience what do with their loved ones. I Highly recommend this place and Carol Rose's willingness to go above and beyond to care for her residents.
